The fishing port of Lagartos River is located on the north coast of the Yucatan peninsula 190 km from the city of Merida.
Before the arrival of the Spaniards the Mayans inhabited the site of Ko Koben now river lizards, for the Maya people this site was the entrance to a shopping center where they exchanged food, tools, dyes, skins, vessels and everything else for salt, which was harvested in the estuary due to its high salinity in the area of Emal and navigated in canoes to reach the commercial market of the artificial island and Isla Cerritos (built by the Mayans with limestone rocks) that was the one that connected with the sacbe towards ek balam and chichen itzá and other Mayan communities that needed the vital mineral that was used for the conservation of food, skins and their medicinal use.
It is currently the most productive commercial port in the East thanks to the heritage of our ancestors, who worried about the future of this beautiful fishing port.
