The landscapes of the north of Baku changes dramatically with the looming silhouette of 520m Beshbarmaq Dash (Five Finger Mountain). This mystical peak features a rocky fistful of phallic crags on the top of a steep grassy peak.
The climbing to the summit it is worth not just for the fabulous Caspian views, but also to see Azerbaijan’s unique take on ‘Islam’. Crowds of locals come here looking for good fortune, asking for a child, or the answer to their problems using a mixture of prayer, sacrifice, chanting and kissing of rocks.
All the rituals follow the number three: take three small stones to the top, sip three times from a cup of holy water, kiss the sacred rock three times then in-cant your wish…guess how many times? White-capped holy men are there to assist, lurking in rocky nooks, their pitches marked by a samovar, a few blankets and some photogenically fluttering votive ribbons. Meanwhile, a few old crones, snotty children and various hangerson pledge for money.
